Laughter Kills Lonesome by Charles Russell |
When I was in college the local public library let you check out pictures to hang on your wall. This was a favorite of mine and my roommates dug it too. We each (there were four of us) got a library card and one after the other checked it out. Despite rules against keeping a picture for more than two consecutive months, we kept that picture the whole school year for three straight years. We would go to the library first thing in August when we arrived at school and check out the "Cowboys" as we called it. If it was not available we would put it on reserve. Then each of us would put in a reserve in turn, so no one could grab it away from us until May when we headed back home.
Until today, I did not know the name of this painting. You can learn something every day, if you try.
Is there any doubt Russell is in Heaven right now schooling Kinkade about how to really use light in a painting?
If I could find a print of this painting on the cheap, I think I would put it up in my office. I bet you would too.

ReplyDelete40 smackeroos and it's yours :)
I know what I am asking for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteThanks
Couldn't agree more...
ReplyDeletePicasso and Warhol were hardly more than con artists bilking those who believe themsevles intellectually superior.
AWhich came first, your love of this painting or seeing Blazing Saddles? Russell was a good painter but you don't need to denigrate other artists to praise his work.
ReplyDeleteWow, teach. Did you miss the point or what.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure who I put down, exactly.
ReplyDeleteSorry Joe, the comment was primarily aimed at "Bob" for his intellectually perceptive comments, but your header set the tone.
ReplyDeleteWow,fuzzy you mean the point about several buddies liking this painting and me agreeing that Russell was a good painter or the swipe at the "painter of light",(hack),(my turn) or what.
Typical lib. Starts insulting other commenters and then complaining when he gets his feelings hurt. Boo Hoo.
ReplyDeleteRita , thanks for setting me straight. If you read my 1st comment there was no insult just comment. My 2nd comment was to comment on a retort to my comment. My 3rd comment is to deal with stereotyping woman who likes to add snarky emotive comments at the end of her diatribes. Well, time to go look at some of that stuff we liberals call art.
ReplyDeleteThe post title was more a reflection on my taste in art rather than "dissing" Picasso or Warhol. I prefer Alphonse de Neuville's "Defense of Rorke's Drift" over Picasso's "Guernica" for instance.
ReplyDeleteI am not an art lover. I have toured the Louvre, though. That adventure is related somewhere in the archives. The Mona Lisa was not what I expected. The giant paintings of Napoleon the next hall over were awesome though.
Since I lack all manner of artistic talent -- I cannot draw, paint, sing, play instruments, or write -- I do appreciate those who can.
Artistic talent must not be genetic. My oldest son is an excellent artist, in addition to his musical talents.
