I radioed Joe when the second plane hit and said "Return to Headquarters". When he got back, he found five of him men to volunteer, got permission from Doug England (the mayor) and went to NY driving his Command car. The NY gave him a police escort to Ground Zero where he dug for days in dust, asbestos, fried human remains and then attended fire department funerals.
By the time he got home, he was deep into a nervous breakdown and had to get help.
