Happy Birthday Indiana

On this date in 1816 Indiana became a state. At that time most of the population lived in the southern part of the state. A few hardy souls ventured along the Wabash or Whitewater rivers This was the woolly west. It took tough and brave SOBs to battle mother nature, wildlife, and the native Indians to settle here. Tecumseh's Confederacy was defeated at the Battle of Tippecanoe only five years before Indiana became a state.

My many times great grandfather arrived sometime around 1820 into the north central part of the state. I am a Hoosier through and through. According to the Internet, and everything is true on the Internet, only a little over three thousand people share my last name in the United States. One-third live in that same part of Indiana today.

Happy Birthday Indiana. You may be 200 years old, but you don't look a day over 150.
