I have low expectations

Chirp....chirp....chirp....

Just as I thought, not one liberal, I love The Obama type, will jump into the fray and offer a substantive reason to vote for the Chosen One. The real reason goes beyond fear of name calling, but more to the fact there is no substance there. I am not calling out the loverly Mrs. O'Brien here, she is under no obligation to amuse me. There are plenty of Obama supporters who showed up to attack me previously, but where are they now? You cannot defend Obama's record because he does not have one. You cannot defend his plan, because he does not have one. The Obama is an empty suit.

This is America, and if you want to place your trust in empty promises of Hope and Change, that is your right. I would prefer there was a little thought behind your vote, but who am I to demand it? This election, my friends, is perfect proof of the genius of our founders. They were adamant the People not elect the President. They knew the office was too important to be treated like a popularity contest or voting for student body President. The put in the Electoral College to filter popular nonsense. That system saved us from disaster in 2000 and just might save us again.

I am not holding my breath, but the invitation for reasoned debate stands. Email me and I will give you access to the old blog so you can make your fact-filled policy statement as a post instead of in the comments.

A final plea

The remote email system for work is down, so I have a bit of time to think. I am sitting here nibbling on some Armour Dried Beef slices and sipping a Dr Pepper. I look at my comments widget and jump over to Holoscan to read my comments from the past several weeks.

I see an amazing trend. My critics are quick to attack me and the commenters when they are offended. Political correctness run amok, as it were. That is OK, I welcome any input, and this is a 100% free speech blog. Some of the comments are offensive, some of my posts may be. With some comments I agree, others I do not.

The one thing I never see from those with a differing viewpoint is a rational discussion of the issues. I present a case for limited government and I get no discourse. I ask policy questions and challenge the followers of The Obama to give me reasons to vote for him and get platitudes and "he isn't Bush". With all respect, the fact that Obama had a tough life is no reason to vote for him. It sucks he was discriminated against. At least he wasn't put in a 6 x 6 cage and beaten regularly. That is a tough few years. Of course, that is no reason to vote for a candidate either. What are Obama's qualifications, what has he done, what will he do? Hope and Change is a slogan, not a policy stance. How is he going to pay for his promised tax cuts and the trillion plus in new spending he proposes? How do you account for the incredible history of poor choices in friends, advisers and mentors? Would you let your kids hang out with the likes of Rezko, Wright and Ayres?

Where are my critics regarding ACORN and voter fraud? Why do you think it is OK to tear down political signs of those who oppose you? Are you worried about our future when the press is more concerned with investigating an Ohio plumber than Obama's ties to a convicted felon? The press is supposed to safeguard our future, yet they cannot get past their bias to actually report the facts or ask the hard questions. As thinkers and journalists and Americans who believe in the Constitution how can you support a candidate that vows to bring back the so-called 'Fairness Doctrine'? Why is it that policy is only aimed at right-wing radio? I turn off the TV when Dan Rather comes on because I believe he is a fraud and a liar. You can do the same with Rush.

Does Obama support reparations? Is there anyone denied emergency care or basic health care? Do we need universal coverage? Some studies indicate 40-60% of those who do not have insurance are young workers who do not think the benefit is worth the cost. Can the Government provide health care more efficiently? What will be the ramifications of pulling out of Iraq before the war is done? Has dialogue worked in North Korea or Iran? Why shouldn't we drill our own oil reserves in addition to exploring alternate fuels (which will also take at least a decade to come to market)? How is a plan to redistribute wealth NOT socialism by another name? How will taxing business not result in inflation?

What do you think of this? What if it was Obama instead? (h/t onemansvote)

When it comes to actual political discourse I need a recording of crickets chirping. How about substantive dialog as opposed to platitudes?

The ACORN weakens the mighty oak

It looks like ACORN is doing their thing here in Indiana, submitting false registrations. This left-leaning organization is under investigation in more than 20 states.

If you read the comments from the article you get the typical "The Repubs are just crying because they are losing" response. The potential for voter fraud should bother Americans of every stripe. There are some who believe their candidate was cheated in the past elections via voter fraud. I would think they would be shouting down ACORN's methods from every corner rather than taking the position "we are just getting some back".

Some of you will point out that Indiana requires a photo ID to vote. The State's tough law was upheld earlier this year in the Supreme Court. Democrats (and ACORN) vigorously fought the photo ID requirement. Some of the commenters on the article linked above felt that the photo ID law would prevent fraud from the many phony and multiple registrations.

Lets take a look at one Indiana citizen. I will call him Hoosierboy. From his home in Central Indiana, he can jump in the car and be in any of SEVEN counties in less than 20 minutes (including the one of his residence). The law says one must show a picture ID to vote. A passport will work. There is no address listed on a passport. Poll workers are to verify the identity of the voter, not the address. So, with little effort our intrepid voter can vote seven times for The Great and Powerful Obama! A quick consultation of the atlas indicates our fraudulent voter could hit a cool baker's dozen of counties with ease in the 12 hours the polls are open in Indiana. Vote early, and our fictional voter could cast a ballot in all 92 counties. Put five or six of his buddies in a van and we are casting some real votes for our Democratic ticket.

I am an upright, honest citizen. I take my right and responsibility to cast my ballot very seriously. If I can think of this, you bet those with nefarious intent have been doing it for years. Tell me again how ACORN is doing a good thing? Explain to me why the people of both parties are not indignant? Indiana is a little state. Take a gander at the hundreds of thousands of suspect registrations the Democratic Secretary of State in Ohio is ignoring and we have a serious problem.

Where is the outrage?

Carbon offsets

I am waiting on my liberal friends to begin the screaming and crying about the need to eliminate global warming. I would think one person flying in a private jet to Hawaii would be a prime incident. There are, after all, commercial flights available that are a green alternative.

I guess as long as a Dimocrit is doing the warming it is OK?

In addition, I would appreciate a comment on this from my Liberal readers, especially those of you who think I was overreaching when I called The Obama a socialist.

Voter Education for Liberals Volume Vc

When we last discussed the political views held by our Founders we saw that they believed that men created a government to preserve their common interest. That government had to be virtuous and it existed only as long as it met the common goals and interests. The Government of England failed in all three aspects, so the People of the American Colonies declared themselves free of that said Government.

It is important to understand that the various colonies did not view themselves as a collective. Because of the way they were chartered and established, each colony looked at itself as a separate state that shared a common geography with other colonies. This is an essential point. A person who lived in Albany viewed himself as a New Yorker. A man from Williamsburg was a Virginian. The thirteen colonies might have been in revolt, but as thirteen separate states all battling a common enemy. The Continental Congress realized it was in their best interest to present a common front, to maintain a Continental Army etc., but only as a convenience.

During and after the Revolution the States operated in a loose confederacy under The Articles of Confederation. This form of government gave us a very weak Federal power. The States had an equal say in all matters and the President's role was akin to the modern Speaker of the House. The government had mo authority to regulate commerce between the States or to collect taxes. It was an administrative forum for the collective whole, at best. It did not work and finally the Constitutional Convention met to create what we now call The Constitution.

In the interest of time and space we will skip the details. The Constitution creates a government of Jefferson's principles. Look at the Preamble:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.


Does that not fit the ideal of government as we discussed previously? Governments are established by men to achieve a common goal? Read the whole Constitution and you will find it meets the other two criteria as well.

Now Jefferson did not like the opening words "we the People". He felt that ultimately the citizens of the United States would began to feel as if the Federal Government was the primary governing body. Jefferson believed "we the States" was a better fit. How would the dialogue before the Civil War and since changed if Jefferson got his way?

Anyway, the Constitution is unique in that it is a limiting document. It spells out specifically the powers of each branch. Moreover the founders were geniuses. The added a means to change the Constitution to fit the exigencies of the times. We have done that 27 times. There is no need for a 'living" document, the Constitution is plain in its language. In addition, the Founders added further safeguards of our liberties. The first Ten Amendments are known as the Bill of Rights and they were added as a condition of ratification. Many of our founders remained convinced a strong government tended to tyranny and wanted safeguards of individual liberty.

Most of the Bill of Rights were put into place to keep the events leading to the Revolution from repeating. The right to free speech and Press and assembly were included. These were taken away by the king after the Boston Tea Party. The Federal Government could not establish a State Church. Many of the colonies were formed by individuals who left England to escape the Church Of England. As it was armed private citizens that fomented the resistance and helped win the victory, the Constitution included the Second Amendment -- the Right to bear arms. Madison wanted to make sure the People could overthrow the Government if it too became tyrannical.

Protections to keep the Government from quartering troops and from forcing you to testify against yourself were included. You had a right to face your accusers in court.

Finally, the founders included the Ninth and Tenth Amendments. These are the most important of the Bill of Rights and the most abused and ignored by our current Federal Government:

Ninth Amendment – Protection of rights not specifically enumerated in the Bill of Rights.
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.


Tenth Amendment – Powers of states and people.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.


If you have followed along this far, you have to agree the Founders only intended a small Federal Government. The ensured its powers in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

So where do the "Heartless Conservatives" get their position? Right there, in the black and white English words of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Later Courts and Presidents and Congress have added to their powers. But how can you say Welfare and No Child Left Behind and Social Security are a result of 'legislating commerce between the States'?

Look at your candidates position and promises and tell me how he fits the role of President and Government as outlined by the men who created this Nation. Explain to me how taxing businesses and individuals and giving that money to other citizens fits with the Constitution. If you cannot, then you have no reason to condemn or criticise me when I say the candidate who wants to do those things is a socialist and wants to destroy our nation.

Finally, do not take my word for what the Founders intended. They summed up their position nicely in a series of letters to the editor and pamphlets promoting the Constitution. They outline the entire document and how it was supposed to work in clear simple English. Take the advise of commenter Sammy. Go to the library. Check out a copy of the Federalist Papers. Go ahead, learn something. You might be surprised your political outlook changes as well.

Voter Education for Liberals Volume Vb

When we last left off on the discussions on the role of Government the American Colonies and Britain had just defeated France in the Seven Years War. From this point on when I use the term American Colonies I am referring to the colonies that would make up the United States, not those of Canada.

As we saw in the previous post, the war had depleted the Treasury of Britain. Without getting bogged down into details, Parliament passed a series of Acts that passed the cost of the War onto the colonies. These are the famous Intolerable Acts, the Stamp Act, The Tea Act etc. The colonists considered themselves citizens of Great Britain. British citizens living in England or Scotland were represented in Parliament and the House of Lords. The boroughs voted the Representative for the House of Commons. Englishmen living in America id not vote for a representative to Parliament. Their local taxing laws were passed by their own representative Colonial Governments.

These new taxes and fees were a huge issue for the Colonists. Parliament was surprised at the outrage. Britain had sent troops to defend the Colonies from the French and it was only right they should pay for this protection. The colonists took a different view, either they were full citizens with the right to representation or they were not. The question was two-fold. Should they pay the taxes and did Parliament have the right to tax them? Tax protests ensued. The tax collectors found their houses burnt and their property destroyed. The Governors clamped down and ultimately the King sent in the army to quell the protest and keep the peace.

This only made things worse, particularly in Boston and New England. Troops were quartered in private citizen's houses. The local legislature was shut down, martial law was instituted. Riots ensued and the citizens began to arm themselves for protection against an increasingly tyrannical government. The Army moved to capture some of the most outspoken protesters and to capture a reported cache of arms at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775. They were met by the local militia and the Revolution was on.

Now this did not all happen in a political vacuum. Representatives from the various states (colonies) had been meeting to plead their case to the King and Parliament begining with the Stamp Act. Letters, petitions and writs were sent with frequency from the political representatives of the Colonies. Ben Franklin was hired as a Representative of the Colonies (our first lobbyist). The First and Second Continental Congress' did all the could to stave off the Rebellion. After the events in Boston and the Battle of Breed's Hill(Bunker Hill) it was clear the nation was at war with Britain. Henry Lee motioned that the Colonies should declare themselves in a state of Rebellion and John Adams seconded the motion (a Declaration of War). A committee was established to write the motion formally.

The task fell to Adams, Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The work was mostly done by Jefferson. Jefferson was a classically educated man of his times. he was well steeped in the philosophies of John Locke.

Jefferson and most of his contemporaries believed that men formed governments only to preserve a common self-interest. This was in direct opposition to the Divine Right of Kings espoused by, well Kings and Monarchs. He believed Government should only govern those issues commonly agreed upon such as defense and regulation of trade. The Founders believed a government derived its power from virtue; either religious or moral virtue to be specific. And finally, Jefferson believed that a government only gained its power through the consent of the governed. In other words, men formed a government because it was in their best interest. That government had to be righteous and Good (in a moral sense) and was only effective as long as it served the purpose of the governed (the reason it was created in the first place). Further, the founders believed that their Rights came not from Government or a King, but were natural. They believed all men were born free and that was their natural state.

So when Jefferson drafted his Declaration of Independence he thought it necessary to tell the world why the Colonies and various States were in a war for freedom. The Declaration begins with the idea that men have a natural right to dissolve their Government:

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.


The Declaration then outlines Man's specific Rights:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.


Thus the seeds were sown. The Founders were in a State of Rebellion and they told the world why. The next step after gaining Independence was to establish their own form of Government that met the criteria outlined in the Declaration.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday, CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe three or four pointy headed elitist liberals need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there, when they come over here I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them off with.

I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at
15% isn't.

Makes ya wonder why anyone would EVER vote Republican, now doesn't it?

Voter Education for Liberals Volume V

There has been a lot of talk this election regarding the role of Government in our lives. I will try to speak in general terms when discussing this issue and use the generic term Liberal and Conservative to label the various viewpoints. Using the political party labels is difficult as the Republicans and Democrats reversed positions on the roll of Government during the 1890s.

For the purpose of this discussion, Liberals will be those persons who believe in a strong Federal Government and an increased role of all levels of government in the social, political, and economic policies of the Republic. They believe man needs to be governed. Conservatives will be those who believe in a limited Government, firm believers in the policy of the Government that governs least, governs best".

To understand the Constitution we must take a quick side trip in history to the time of Enlightenment and the changing roll of Government and The Church in Europe. Some people decry the Eurocentric historiography of America, but in reality the foundations of our Nation and its government come from Europe. In particular the lawyers and printers and educated class of Colonial America came primarily from England. These are the men who crafted our founding documents and designed our Nation's political system.

Stop stop stop (insert braking sound here). To get a complete understanding of this subject we are going to have to go back and discuss the religious, political and economic evolutions over about three centuries. We will have to delve into the Crusades, the Magna Carta, Martin Luther, Charles Martel and then tackle Locke and Columbus, Cortez, and Hudson. The reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. This is going to take about 20 posts and 5 hours of reading for you. Before I go much further I will have lost 79 of my 80 regular readers. My last reader at that point, GuyK, will be skimming since he already knows the history.

As a compromise I am going to ask you to take my word the Founders believed certain things, they were educated in a certain way. If you have further questions or doubts I will be glad to answer your specifics directly or point you in which direction to do your research. Besides, this should have been covered in school. Unfortunately most text books cover these subjects but never tie them in. Historians often think the non-historian can make the connections or is even interested enough to try. Most people cannot and are not. The teaching of history is a completely different bug up my ass we will discuss at a later date.

By the early 1700s farmers comprises only a little more than 1/3 of the workers in Great Britain. As a heavily populated island nation, Britain depended on her colonies to supply raw materials and foodstuffs. The American colonies were among the chief suppliers. At the same time nearly 80% of the American colonists were involved in agriculture. Few in Europe were land holders, an astonishing 90+ percent of colonists owned land. Americans enjoyed significant freedoms not allowed in Britain. A century and a half of what has been termed "benign neglect" from the Crown of England saw the colonies develop their own political system, including local and "state" governments and courts. None of these were sanctioned by the King or Parliment, but the appointed Royal Governors used them to efficiently run the colonies. As long as the colonies made money for English merchants and caused no trouble, they were left alone.

As part of a greater European War (The Seven Years War), the Colonies and their British Sovereign found themselves embroiled in a war with France in the 1750s and early 1760s. The theater of war that occurred in North America was the so called French and Indian War. You may have a vague recollection of this -- it was covered in the first weeks of 8th Grade history. This war was one of the root causes of the Revolution.

The Treaty of Paris settled the conflict and Great Britain came into possession of most of what is now the US and Canada east of the Mississippi. as a result if the War, the Crown was heavily in debt. As we know from Iraq, wars are uncommonly expensive. Without boring you with details -- that is not our purpose here -- the interest on the debt alone consumed about 70% of the gross revenues of the Royal Treasury. The people of great Britain were already among the heaviest taxed in Europe and the King was looking for additional revenue. He turned his eye westward to his rich American Colonies.

Stick with me. In the next post we will get to how this led to the Revolution, The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. We will examine the politics that leads to modern Liberal and Conservative thought.

does the concept of having an open heart and open mind resonate with anyone here?


My quick response is that there is a big difference when we are forced to be charitable. In your world, someone else decides how much we are to be compassionate, how open hearted we should be. My hard-earned money is taken and given to someone else. There is a big difference in charity and the redistribution of wealth. There have been numerous studies throughout the years that show Republicans give more to charities than Democrats. Some of this might be attributed to social-economics, but some is in the basic foundations of our political beliefs and understanding of human responsibility.

I am working on a long post that might surprise you MOC, that addresses this topic. I will challenge YOU to look at it with an open mind. Your first task is to accept that stereotypes are not productive. Your assumption that I am uncharitable, cold-hearted and closed minded has no basis in fact. You have no idea how I spend my time. Do you really only believe Liberals work at Habitat for Humanity or the local food bank? How much do I donate to the Boys Club? You have no idea if I help out families at Christmas or spend my weekends cleaning the local river. Do you think only Democrats spend their Spring Break working to improve conditions in a Haitian village? Your very assumption is pompous and arrogant. How dare you lecture me on being closed-minded? We might have a difference in opinion, but that does not justify the judgment I am in the wrong. Come back when the post is done and then you can show me the error of my ways. In the meantime, you should open up and accept that most Americans are good, kind-hearted people. That does not change based on political preference.

Unfortunately I am faced with a heavy workload and personal issues (I do have a life outside of the internet). It may be the weekend before it is done.

I want to take a moment here to ask those of you who are so inclined to say a quick prayer for my friend Jan. Her stepfather Jim died yesterday. Jim was one of the nicest men you would ever meet. He doted on his grandchildren. When we would be at her house and he was there you could almost always find him down playing with the kids or watching a movie with them. I have known him for three decades and I never heard him speak harsh word. Jim was always smiling. I am sure he had the same worries and problems as the rest of us, but he never showed it. The world is worse place today with out him. We will all miss you Pappy. His loss will be hard for Jan and her family as well as all of us who knew him.

Chapter 37, I finally get it

I have never considered myself stupid, but I am not always the sharpest arrow in the quiver. After thinking about it for a while, I am not so disturbed by The Obama's "spread the wealth" response to the famous Joe the Plumber.

What I find amazing is that roughly fifty percent of the US sees nothing wrong with it.

I was born a ramblin' man

The power kicked off for a minute or so. Car meet pole, construction crew mishap, did someone flip the wrong switch at the power plant? Sudden power outages and surges are one of the mysteries of life, like rainbows, the migration habits of butterflies, the policies and qualifications of certain Democratic candidates for higher office, nature vs. nurture, and man's inhumanity to man.
By the way English majors, here is the theme of any book/novel/play you will have to read critically in your formative educational years:

Man vs. Nature
Man's inhumanity to man
Man's insignificance

One of these is always the right answer. You are welcome. I digress...

The outage was just enough to make the clocks flash a steady tattoo of 12;00 12:00 12:00. It stopped the load of towels I had just thrown into the dryer (does that make you hot ladies -- me doing laundry?). Of course the computer shut down, I again entered the world of passwords and user names.

While I was away the internet chugged along, filling with bytes and bits of information, true and false. Commenters commented, posters posted and news sites rotated through aimless headlines. On the cutting edge

I sharpened some of my knives yesterday. I like my kitchen knives to be razor-sharp. I have some good knives and some cheap ones. The cheap ones are easier to sharpen, but they do not hold an edge as well. My really good knives rarely need sharpening.

I sharpened my old Boy Scout sheath knife. I do not think the Scouts let kids wear that type of knife any more. That knife saw me through a lot of scouting and camping. I have used it to create tinder for fires, cut rope and build fire-by-friction sets. It has cut knots from shoestrings and whittled a thousand toothpicks. I have eaten from it and skinned rabbits and squirrels with its keen blade. It has been used as a pry, a screwdriver, and twice as a weapon (luckily no one was hurt).

There a lot of memories tied to that thin four inch blade. It helped me become an Eagle Scout and a Firecrafter.

Week off to play golf.....

Dave had a week off and decided to play golf every day. Monday morning, he found himself paired with an attractive woman, Annette, who turned out to be a very good golfer.

They started with a few casual bets, but by the back nine it was a full-blown competition. On the 18th green, Annette sank her long birdie putt for the win.

Dave congratulated her and paid off his losses.

Annette asked for a ride home and, on the way, told him, 'You know, Dave, I haven't enjoyed myself so much on the golf course in a long time. In fact, pull over so I can express my appreciation.'

He did, they kissed, and one thing led to another and soon she gave him the best oral sex he'd ever had.

The next morning, they met again on the first tee and played toogether again.

They had another magnificent day, Enjoying each other's company and playing tight, competitive golf.

Again Annette beat him, but she also showed her appreciation on the drive home. This went on all week, with Dave narrowly losing every day, his male ego bruised, but not unhappy.

On Friday's drive home, Dave said, 'Annette, you've been great to be with all this week and tonight I'd like to return the favor. I made reservations at the best restaurant in tow n for us and reserved the penthouse suite at the best hotel. What do you say?'

Annette burst into tears. 'I can't!'

'What? Why not?' asked Dave.

'Because,' she sobbed, 'I'm in the middle of a sex change and the doctor hasn't completed that part of me yet!'

'What?!' Aghast, Dave swerved off the road, screeched to a stop and cursed madly, overcome with emotion.

'I'm so sorry,' says Annette, 'You have a right to be angry with me.'

'You bastard!' Dave screamed, his face bright red. 'You cheatin bastard! All week long you've been playing off the women's tees!!'

Heeeeeers Obama

America meet your next President. He is a Marxist in every sense of the word. He is a believer in the redistribution of wealth. He believes in the adage of each to his abilities/each to his needs. He believes it is a tax 'cut' to take money from one citizen and give it to another. He has the weakest record of public service and administration of any candidate in recent history. He is a supporter of abortion at any time of the pregnancy, and even voted to allow the killing of a baby born alive after an attempted abortion. Even fervent supporters of 'choice' acknowledge the issues with second and third term abortions. He endorses a policy of cut and run, the method used by President Clinton in Somalia. Terrorist bin Laden said that policy is what led to the attacks on 9/11. For bin Laden, America does not have the stomach for a tough war. Your new President embodies this position. He is against drilling for domestic oil, instead he believes we will magically develop alternative energies. Be prepared for more wild gasoline price fluctuations. America, meet Barack Obama, your next President.

It did not have to be this way. The liberals were down on the canvas. The Conservatives refused to deliver the knockout blow. Instead they became a bloated soft mirror version of the competition. The concept of limited Government and fiscal responsibility flew by the wayside.

We chose a candidate that embodies all that was wrong with the two Bush Presidencies. Somehow the party fell back into control of the Country Club Republicans. The old adage is true, follow the money.

In last night's debate McCain had a chance to win and he blew it. Obama offered a clear vision of his socialist agenda with Joe the Plumber. McCain needed to pound away, to emphatically tell the American people the truth. "Senator Obama, your tax plan is straight from the book of Karl Marx. Your redistribution of wealth is more fit for the failing economies of Europe and the old Soviet Union. The American people are not interested in following an economic policy that has failed everywhere it has been tried." Repeat as necessary. McCain could not rise to the occasion. Instead McCain lamented there were not more debates. Wow, does McCain want to be defeated by Reagan-like margins? Because that is what would happen if there were more opportunities for Obama to kick his ass.

Here is a perfect analysis of what is wrong with the McCain, why Conservatives are so angry. Read this.

The problem stems from GW Bush. Only in protecting us from terror has he been effective. Like McCain he has been unwilling or unable to use his bully pulpit. Fair or not, he will be remembered for the largest Government take-over of private industry ever. He declined to play politics (admirable but stupid for the long-term success of the Party). Mark my words, GW Bush will go down in history as a rather ineffectual President. Hoover took the hit for the depression. Historians and economists mostly agree the steps he initiated would have brought us from the depression sooner. FDR gave us the New Deal, and we are still paying for it today. Hoover gets the blame, the same will be true of GW Bush.

What do I expect? More than one third of Americans do not pay taxes. Few Americans have the economic understanding that businesses pass their costs to consumers. Too many are truly ignorant of their candidate's positions. The media overwhelmingly supports one candidate. We get what we deserve and hope we can hold on for two or four years and make it right.

America meet your President. You have met him before. He will tax businesses and institute an unworkable energy policy. He will open dialogue with our enemies and refuse to engage them with force when necessary. Prepare for stagnant business growth and runaway interest rates. Look for double digit inflation as the dollar falls further. You will take the blame as Americans, because the Government is never wrong. You will be told to just put on a sweater during the cold winter. His inexperience will show at every crisis. The Nation will bear the scorn of the world and our enemies will grow stronger. Military budgets will be cut as welfare grows. America meet your President, we have lived through him already:

Live blogging lunch time

Sinatra croons Moonlight in Vermont in the background as I put down my novel. It is about Marines in Korea.

I can smell my chicken pot pie baking in the oven. I have not had a Salisbury Steak TV dinner in weeks. There is one in the freezer, but it has no appeal. Maybe eating the same thing at least once a week for five or six years gets to you over time. The last can of Spam I fried was a bit off. Maybe it is me.

The sun filters through the living room skylights. I look out at the big grasses waving in the slight breeze. The trees are just starting to turn pale green and yellow. The reds and oranges will come soon. It is supposed to turn cold this weekend -- that will get the fall colors flowing.

The internet 'radio' switches to Ella Fitzgerald.

I have not seen my oldest son or my daughter for weeks. I miss them. Two years ago yesterday my oldest son's best friend died in a car wreck. I know my boy had a tough day yesterday. I pray every day for God to ease his pain, but not dull his memory.

Sometimes we get caught up in politics, in sports, in work, in life, the struggle for money -- we forget the things that make us human. The gurgling laugh of a baby. The hugs of your children. The soft whisper of a kiss from your wife as she heads for work.

Last week as my wife was leaving for work, I stood on the garage step as I do each morning. I reminded her I would be home the next day as I was going to Chicago. She paused at the open door to the Durango and came back to give me a full kiss on the lips and told me to be careful. The stuff of songs. The poetry of life.

A cardinal sits on the fence. It is only about a month until Thanksgiving, the seasons race by. Soon snow will fly and I will no longer sit at the computer in jean shorts, bare feet tapping to the Chairman of the Board.

Lucky, Lucky You

I should be winging my way to visit a customer about now.

I am of the firm opinion that the OEM supplier of alternators for the Ford Taurus produces a crappy product. Wouldn't it be ironic if my company's widgets were a component of said alternator?

As I am here posting, I bet you have made the connection.

Yes, the alternator died in my car this morning. This is the second one for my company car (you did not think I would buy a Taurus on my own did you?). The first alternator was replaced when I had the car for TWO days. Now just over two years later that one died.

I was at the ATM grabbing a little cash (there was not much to get). As I rolled up the window I noticed the motor pushed up the window very slowly as if it had no power. The radio did not come on when I pushed the button. Uh oh says I to myself. I noticed the dash lights etc are off. This is bad I says as the car seems to miss out a little. The air conditioner is not working. I say a quick prayer and turn in the direction of the dealer (the closest repair place). I make it the mile or so without incident. They tell me they will have a new alternator this afternoon to replace the dead one. I ask for and receive a ride home (in some ways small towns are very good).

So you will get me hanging around the interwebz today, wasting time instead of schmoozing customers. And yes, I might get a little paperwork done. September and October to-date expenses are waiting to be catalogued and turned in.

Some days it is good to be me, and this fine warm fall Wednesday is one of those days.

A new point of view

I was having dinner with a bunch of relatives Saturday (they were my wife's relatives). A discussion on politics ensued. Here, I am aggressive and a staunch defender of my positions. In discussions with customers and relatives there is no point in big arguments -- they outlast the election. I just chalk some people's positions to ignorance. Pointing that out serves no purpose.

Anyway one female relative said she cannot stand Palin. I asked why. She said Sarah Palin comes across as an average ordinary person. She said Palin was just like her.

I asked why she did not like her then. My niece said "Because she is just like me, and I am not qualified to be President or Vice President".

Some of us like Mrs. Palin because she seems so..unpolitical. Others hate for that very reason. I am not sure I have a comment or analysis here, I just find it interesting.

What do you think? Oh, and no bullshit about "experience" -- her lack of experience is no more than Carter, Clinton, or even Obama. To pretend otherwise marks you narrow-minded. (one again I try to get an honest open-minded dialogue).

Wow Shaina I love your support for the first amendment. Talk about the McCain hatred. Is this how it is going to be when your side gets in charge -- no other opinions allowed? I guess Orwell was just off by about 25 years. I cannot believe no one there had an issue with the person going onto someone else's property and removing a political sign. "[N]ot in my neighborhood" -- and Republicans are called intolerant and filled with hate? What if her neighborhood was overwhelmingly in favor of McCain? Should Shaina be denied political signs that her neighbors do not agree with? Of course not. Do you all also support vandalizing cars with bumper stickers with which you disagree? Sadly, I do not think Shaina is an isolated case.

Usually the weekends here are filled with nonsense and frivolity. I asked my readers what qualifications The Obama had to be President and you told me. I will use a post for my rebuttal, as answering you all in the comments is too long.

In summation we should vote for The Obama because:

Randy says we should vote for him because he graduated from Columbia and Harvard Law. And because he is a good politician. Funny, I know a President that graduated from Yale and Harvard. He had better grades that Al Gore or John Kerry. He owned several successful businesses. He was a governor of a very large state. For most Democrats he is described as a complete buffoon and moron. Please meet GW Bush. So Randy, is a good education a qualification or not? Oh, FYI pigs are not people, they cannot be elected to any Federal Office [sarcasm alert]. I guess your real reason is that he is nota Republican? See below.

Sammy, who believes Communism might not be so bad, says we should vote for The Obama "Because he's not a Republican". Voting a straight ticket brands you as a narrow-minded and politically naive. I think we should look for the best person for the job. It is thinking like yours that helps elect representatives like Cynthia McKinney and David Duke, both idiots with extreme views. There was once a guy running for election as mayor in my hometown. He could not read. He got a lot of votes because he was, as one guy told me, "the representative of my party, and my party is always right". There is not really any more to say on that subject. Besides anyone who thinks a Communist would be better than any Republican displays an uncommon ignorance of history.

Momentofchoice tells us "What church someone attends is not important to me, what they do every day of the week is and how they conduct themselves and treat other human beings is important". I would add that the people an individual surrounds himself with is also important. If your child was hanging around with drug users and criminals I think you would not say that was OK, even if his behavior seemed OK and he treated other humans in an exemplary manner. We are judged by our associations. I am pretty sure if a given candidate (this is an example people) attended a church that preached the destruction of the Jews by any means possible or a mosque that preached radical Islam and supported terrorist attacks like 9/11 you would not say a person's church is inconsequential. It is a matter of degree. When we start parsing morals we all lose. Sorry, but Obama sat in that church for 20 years and heard the Reverend Wright preach against Jews, whites and the United States of America. He is as bigoted as any member of the KKK. I am sure offended. He is a close associate of a known criminal and terrorists. That should at least give you pause. MOC, every conservative in this country has first and second thoughts about McCain. Like your pundit, few of us support him. He is a liberal Republican. Most of us will hold our nose and vote for the lessor of two evils. And what does driving a Jetta have to do with anything? We have a Ford, A Honda, a Chevy and a Dodge. Does that make me an anarchist? Viva Sacco and Vanzetti!

Judy tells us he "helped deliver", "supported", "sponsored and co-sponsored" and 'voted for". What acts and laws did he write? How do you account for his preponderance of "present" votes? Where has he worked with those of the other party for the common good? Why, if he "He supported gun-control measures, including a ban on semiautomatic assault weapons" is he protesting vigorously (including threatened legal action) ads from the NRA claiming he supports gun control?

Just passing through tells us Clinton was just a governor of a small state and did pretty well. How do the same Democrats cry that Palin is too inexperienced to be elected, that she has no foreign policy expertise. How much did Clinton have? How much did Carter have? OK, Carter is a bad example since he is arguably the worst President in history. He also says we should vote for Obama because "He's a smart...smart guy". He goes on to indicate Bush is stupid. Again, I guess Ivy League educations only make Democrats smart. OK, JPT you claim that Obama is the man because he does not have a long political resume. You say Clinton was pretty successful because he was a small state governor, then spend a whole paragraph on Palin. Just what disqualifies her? Why does "she {have] no business in that seat"? You can dislike her for her politics, but that does not make her unqualified. Here is your hypocrisy award.

James is right. Not a single person has outlined Obama's past or given me a real reason to vote for him beyond he is a Democrat, or he is smart. No one has told me why his past associations are not an indication of his political beliefs. Comments remain open.

Dear Obama supporters

Rather than endless fights over who did what to whom and which party screwed us all more, let us look at facts.

Promises are like flatulence, mostly they stink and few last long. Unless you are completely stupid you know the President cannot pass a single law. He cannot create jobs unless he owns a business. He can encourage Congress to do his bidding, but every President in history, could he talk, would only laugh at that notion. Can we agree on this?

Our only way to judge a candidate is not on his promises but his past. I challenge you to demonstrate where Mr. Obama has shown true leadership in his past. What businesses has he run? What executive position has he held? What committee hearings has he chaired? What legislation has he written and passed?

Absent any of those concrete demonstrations of his qualifications, who are his mentors, what philosophers and leaders has he quoted, has he emulated, has he served with? What organizations support him the closest? What church did he attend?

Mr. Obama has no military, or business or executive experience. He has no major legislative accomplishments (he did vote present a lot in Illinois. Thus we can only make assumptions of his political beliefs based on the past. His associations include William Ayres and unrepentant terrorist. The Reverend Wright, an avowed racist against Jews and Whites and a person whose own words do not convey a love of the United States.

Here is my challenge. Prove me wrong. Tell me why I should vote for this person. What in his past shows he is qualified to be President. Remember, promises do not count.

I bet I will hear nothing from my liberal friends...

In Requiem

Johnny Smith died in the early morning hours last Sunday. It is a terrible tragedy. He was, by all accounts a bright young man with a future. It appears he died by drinking too much alcohol after Homecoming at Wabash College. He was a pledge at Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

Today, the Fraternity has been suspended by the college. They will likely lose their charter. The fraternity has been an active member of the Wabash community for more than 100 years. Just days after they lost a friend, a brother, the men of Delta Tau Delta will be forced from their home and split up.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am an alumnus of Wabash College. I was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Also for the record, Fraternities at Wabash are not like those at most universities. Some 70% of students live in a Fraternity House (in my day it was closer to 90%). I would not have been in a fraternity at a different school. Living in a Fraternity at Wabash is the norm.

Mr. Smith was 18. No one forced him to drink. He made decisions on his own. His Grandmother has alluded Johnny said he was under a lot of pressure to drink, but if so he only had to say a word and he could leave the house. The college would have found him a room within hours. This was not an arcane pledge ritual where he was forced to drink. It was Homecoming, no pledge activities happen on Homecoming night. Besides, even in my time that kind of hazing had become history.

The officers of Beta Psi, Delta Tau Delta and Wabash College will likely be sued over this. The college and International Fraternity are likely just protecting themselves. Unless Smith was tied down and the beer or whiskey or whatever was poured down his throat, the responsibility lies with one person. I do not want to speak ill of the dead, but we all make choices. This young man made a tragic one.

It is time, as citizens of the United States, that we begin to expect people to take responsibility for their actions. Was there an environment where binge drinking was accepted and probably even encouraged? I have no doubt. Was alcohol provided to underage students? If that is the issue, the College better move to shut down every Fraternity and living unit on campus. Universities and Colleges across America should immediately close their doors to all but commuter students. Not to be flip, but Otter's speech at Dean Wormer's hearing In Animal House comes to mind. You remember; "If you criticize us aren't you condemning the fraternity system? If you criticise the fraternity system aren't criticising the educational system...?".

While I lived in the Fraternity there were several members that did not drink, or rarely drank. No one had an issue with that. We accepted their decision, and kind of admired them. That moderate person was not me. I enjoyed my college years with gusto. In recent years I have chosen to be the designated driver on many occasions. A good time can be had without being drunk.

Young men are distraught over the death of their friend and fraternity brother. The President of the College talked about the pain of the seventy or so members of the Fraternity at a memorial service this week. I guess he was only concerned about those students up to the point of throwing them out of their house. They are being punished for the actions of one individual. That is a sad commentary on the America of today. The America where bartenders are arrested and sued when a drunk wrecks his car, where gun manufacturers are sued when their product is used in a crime, where a manufacturer of a legal product is sued when a person chooses to smoke and get the very disease warned of on every pack. This my friends is your America.

RIP Mr. Smith.

Let me understand your latest proposal. We just took $750,000,000,000 to bail out banks for making bad business decisions. These banks gave loans and mortgages to unqualified people who could not make the payments. Now you want to take my money and give it to these same people who took on loans they could not afford? In essence you want me to make my rent/mortgage, the mortgage of a guy who cannot afford his payments, and pay the bank for making the bad loan? Am I missing something here?

I was never a big fan, you have been a little too liberal for me. You brought me back with your Veep selection, and the basic fact that I would vote for The Obama when flying monkeys shoot from my asshole singing Michael Row the Boat Ashore in rounds while twirling flaming batons. Now you have gone so far toward socialist-government-is the answer policies you might have convinced me to just not vote.

Whomever is advising you is an idiot. If you are coming up with this garbage you should listen to your advisers. The American people were overwhelmingly against the bailout. Your latest proposal is more of the same. Are you crazy? If you are going to pander, at least choose a program that will actually buy votes, not drive away those who might have supported you.

While I am tossing you free advice, your representative completely blew it on the Today Show this morning. When pressed why you were bring up The Obama's ties to terrorists, she should not have said it was unimportant. You should hammer it. Try the approach that we have had Presidents in the past with character flaws, that lied to the American People. Ask if we want to go down that road, electing people with questionable character? Point out that The Obama has ties to Ayers, Dorn, Rev. Wright, Mike Rezco: all of questionable and shady character. The Obama says he did not know these people held anti-American views or were criminals. Ask the American people if they want to elect someone with such bad judgement and people reading skills. If he has such poor judgment in choosing associates, how can we trust him to negotiate and interact with the Irans of the world?

While I am on the subject of the Today Show, you have finally pushed me too far with your biased reporting NBC. You give the Dems unlimited rebuttal time and hammer the Repubs. Enough, I will exercise my opinion by tuning in to another show.

A heavy burden

Cubs lose.

The pitching was again good enough.

I am beginning to think 100 years of fan expectation is too much for any team or player to bear.

It is far, far less painful when they are out of it by mid-July.

Wait 'till next year? Like Otter says, not in my lifetime. My Grandfather was born, lived and died a Cubs fan and he never saw a World Series Championship. My boys are not Cubs fans. My Daughter is. Maybe she will live to see it.

The wife is semi-pleased. She too cheers for the Northsiders, but this means one more year without me getting that Cubs tat...Hey, maybe that act of defiance, of team loyalty is what is needed to mitigate the goat's Karma.

Debate redux

I watched the beginning of the Veep Debate last night, and sections between innings of the Cubs/Dodgers abortion. Mind you, I am in a pretty foul mood today on account of both events.

Pallin missed an easy homerun by pandering to the populist crowd. She had a clear chance to place the Mortgage bailout blame on both Wall Street and the FUCKING DEMOCRATS who caused it -- especially the policies of Clinton and the CRA. Every clear analysis shows that those incestuous cousins Freddie and Fannie were the prime culprits in the credit death spiral. Pallin took the McRino position and blamed Wall Street.

She gave only a lukewarm position that man is not completely responsible for Global Warming. She let Biden get away with saying the polar caps were melting. She is from Alaska for cripes sake, she knows the polar ice is thicker than it has been in several years right now.

Later, she made some good points and I thought she hammered the Dims pretty good on the war and taxes. She did point out that The Obama has a spending list longer than his arm. She missed a good opportunity to point out that Bidden only said the things they could not afford given the current economy is what McCain wants to do. That means the Dims are going to try and push their Socialist agenda. Hello weaker dollar, hello higher prices.

Pallin did hammer him on drill now, at least in the few minutes I saw between innings.

I would put the results a tie, but most pundits had her flubbing badly, which she did not do. Compared to the low media expectations she did great. By the end of the day she will be a moron again, all Repubs are morons to the media.

The moderator was very fair.

I said this in comments over at Nathan's, politics is a nasty street fight -- it always has been. McCain (and thus Pallin) want to fight by Gentleman's rules. They are preparing for a boxing match while their opponents are preparing for a brawl. The Republicans have to come out swinging. They should have pinned the economic mess on the policies of Clinton. She should have forced Biden to say why we should not pursue drilling along with alternate energy. She should have pointed out it might take ten years to get oil flowing, but how long will it take to develop alternate energy that does not exist? She should have pointed out it was the Dems that blocked drilling in Anwar ten years ago -- we would have the oil NOW.

I read e;sewhere that Pallin never mentioned "The Democratic Party" even once. She will not praise the Republican Party. This is straight from the McCain playbook. The problem is that if she does not blame the other guy, or support her party's past good actions, she does noty give the pudding head undecideds any amunition. They can onluy go by the ads they see. The Liberal wing of the Democratic party must be blamed for their actions.

Oh well, it is as I feared, we are voting for either a Socialist or a less Socialist government. Where is the next Reagan?

I am sure some of my readers are not going to be pleased with this commentary. I try to be objective on occasion (just when I criticised Bush earlier this year).

When the Dinosaurs roamed the Earth


While we are on a picture sharing jag, here is a prime photo of the old Hoosierboy as a studly young man back in the dark ages of 1970-1971. This is my third grade class. That is me in the sharp plaid outfit on the lower right. I am pretty sure my Mom made that suit.

I know.

See the chick on the left trying to eyeball me? We are standing on the steps of Samuel P. Kyger Elementary School. My grandfather went there. It finally was closed this year.
