You really should try it. It's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. Nowadays the skates they rent to you are usually really sturdy (not as much ankle strength needed as in the times when we were growing up).
Sure, you'll be unsteady and look funny the first several go-rounds. Hang on to the rails at first. But I'm betting you'll get it if you want to try.
As that Kringle [Cringle?] dude said to the Winter Wizard... "put ONE foot in front of the other..."
This is Jackie in CA. I'm with Sluggy; I loved to roller skate and was very good at it, but I couldn't ice skate to save my soul! Bad knees and a bad back keep me from doing either now--but sometimes I DO miss roller skating!

I tried ice skating once. I bombed at it. Something to do with weak ankles. Yet I was a roller skating beast! Go figure....
