Pioneering Audio

I worked my ass off and purchased one of these with funds saved from my first job. Mine was circa 1977 or 1978, but looked exactly like that.  Do you have any idea how long you had to save  to get $300 bucks when you made minimum wage? It is a long damn time when minimum wage was about $2.30 an hour.  This is especially true when you only worked 15 hours per week. I also had to buy gas, have spending money, and buy the occasional six pack of beer pop on a Friday night.

This receiver pumped into a couple of Utah brand speakers with 12" woofers.  I later added a couple of Pioneer speakers with 10" woofers.  I could shake every window in the house. I sold the whole set around 1990 along with a very nice turntable and a cassette player.  The whole stack took a lot of room.

I wish I had it back.

Good Christ.

I still have a stereo stack, complete with a double tape deck and turntable, which, incidentally, is driven by a rubber band and makes a cameo appearance in The Irish Hungarian Guide to the Domestic Arts.

Check Craigslist or The Free Ad Paper: A few phonecalls & a C-note or two will likely liberate a similar stack from someone's attic, where it's been collecting dust for 20 years but is still serviceable.

OTOH Ihave a couple of nice speakers that play my iPod and sound really good

They take up a fraction of the space

There are no entertaining analog needles tracking the tunes, but who needs 'em anyway?

We still have the set in our closet. Bob bought it in Vietnam and had it shipped home. Looks just like that.

Similar story here, but I went with a Marantz receiver/amp (remember them?) and Advent speakers. The speakers had their woofers replaced about 10 years ago and are still going and sounding great. Bringing that stuff home the first day and setting them up remains one of the best, most exciting days of my life.

I have a similar unit stuck away in a closet. I'll have to go look and see what model it is. Sadly the rest of the stuff is all gone, except for the 7" open reel recorder that's still sitting here behind me in another closet...it's a Pioneer RT-707 that I bought years ago to record talk radio while I was at work. Yes I had an electronic timer hooked up to it :)

Yep had the same thing, the old reel to reel and turntable are long gone.

Still running a mid-70s JVC receiver (quadraphonic, no less) with KLH speakers of similar vintage.

I started building my credit with a 300 loan from a credit union and got a kick ass JVC system that would kick ass. I took that big assed system to many outdoor partys and pig roasts. dont even remember which system it was, but thats how I started building my credit and never missed a payment on anything and never had to ask anyone to co-sign.

Yep. I made mix tapes and later mix CDs by the dozens

Now I have shuffle and play lists on my iPhone instead

I have a big set up(I run my computer thru the amp) in my classroom and art lab at school. nothing like a little "Ride of the Valkyries" or led Zep's "Moby Dick" to get the kids juices going at 8:00am(while they're working on a project).

too bad I did not have you for a teacher, I would have appreciated art more.

I once spent a whole hour in the Louvre, and for me that was enough...

The story is in the archives somewhere.

I finally put my pile in the basement last year. Still works, though. Finally had to replace the Advent speakers with KLH's about ten years ago.

I have about 400 LP's. Don't get much play these days, alas.

Now my music library fits in the palm of my hand. The only thing I miss is the full size album art. I don't miss the pops and scratches.

And yet... when I bought my first set of stereo components - this was January 1972 - put it together and put an LP on the turntable, it was magnificent. I can still remember every note, clear as day. (Traffic, "Evening Blue.")
