Trump has decided we no longer need a Department of Defense, but rather a Department of War. Whatever, but this is stupid. Once again politicians never think about the cost. How much borrowed money will we spend to change the signage on every building, create new letterhead, modify forms, websites, and requisitions?
Sure it sounds great, but doesn’t anyone ever think that it is my money and your money they are wasting on nonsense like this? Is there even one single way this helps with military readiness?
That is what I thought.

Joe, I hate to contradict you yet again, but renaming the Department is intended to reinforce its purpose.
It is not a specialized Department of State spin-off. It is intended to be a Department of people who break things and kill people, not go invade a country (like Iraq or Afghanistan) and then sit there for years trying to nation-build in countries that don't appreciate it.
As a History graduate of that fine university up in Crawfordsville, I'm sure you've encountered the maxim "Si vis pacem, para bellum." That's what we need to get back to after 80 years of UN mush about "no offensive war."
First department of war was established in 1789 by President George Washington. Its first Secretary was Henry Knox, who had previously served in the same role under the Articles of Confederation.Truman change War to Defense in 1949, 160 years later. Trump just did wait as long. Dept of Defense was only 76 years old. So in my life time it's now been changed twice. Along with military bases going back to original names.
The mission is defined by the commander in chief. A department name change makes no difference to troop readiness
It is a waste just like changing the maps to Gulf of America. Sure it sounds great but at what actual cost to taxpayers?
Actually, changing the name might be a way Trump is really saving us American taxpayers billions of dollars. If by changing the name only, it eliminates America realistically fighting a war because the name change sets off a preemptive strike to any country considering bombing or attacking the USA. Think about it. If your next door neighbor renamed his last name from Smith to "Imagonnakillu" you'd rethink having any dealings with him whatsoever. I think the War rename was quite ingenious.
Well, looks like representatives from the 82nd Chairborne have weighed in . . . .
Probably the same "cost" to change the President's picture on the wall every year............
The DoD/DoW has more than 560,000 buildings that will need new signage. That doesn’t even include the cost to redo websites, forms, letterhead, etc. — we are talking millions of dollars.
I'd rather pay for new signage than "transing" prisoners ANY day.
Fred
Initial estimated costs are $62.5 million.
Yes. Why pay for either?
