A discussion of modern media and its effects upon an educated society

I am in the middle of the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy.  The books are very good.  I am not usually much of a science fiction-type guy, but these have been very enjoyable. I am also in the midst of re-reading In God We Trust by Jean Shepherd. The iconic Holiday movie A Christmas Story (you know -- Ralphie) was based on a chapter in this collection of stories about growing up in Da Region (NW Indiana) in the Depression.

The Wife and I went to the dollar theater last night (it really costs $2.25) and saw The Help. I give it a hearty two thumbs up, even though it lacked all of the elements that make for a good movie -- no cars, no horses, no guns. There was not even any nekkid women breasties. In any case it was well worth the price of admission.  Plus the popcorn was fresh!

Stale popcorn can ruin a perfectly good movie.

You went with your wife to see that?

No way my husband would do that.

I'm gonna be sneakin' off to the dollar theater during the day by myself to see that I think. Or, I can just wait until they start playing it 4 times a day on one of the free movie channels.

I liked that movie muchly. The book wasn't bad, either.

The Jean Shepherd book sounds interesting.

Oh geez. You can't go to the dollar theatre around where I live or you would be glued to the gum, spilled drinks and God knows what else has been left in the seats.

It is NASTY. But then again, I live a little too close to the "big city", so you can imagine the "clientele" the dollar theatre brings in.

We have a decent local theatre and then a better one across the street from the dollar place.

Since we rarely go to the movies, we visit the local place or the one at the mall. Spend more on the popcorn than the movie since we go before the evening.

I heard once that the theatre managers actually get most of their income based upon the amount of popcorn they sell, which makes sense as to why it's so expensive.

If we go to the movies, it's to the matinee on Sunday.
$5/adult before 6pm.
Twenty five cent refills on the popcorn, also, so we always get a refill on the way out.
The Muppets tomorrow.

Rita I go to the dollar theater in the same big city where you live, I go to the one on the south side. It is pretty dirty but the price is right. We usually go to the big cineplex at the mall

Ours is on the east side Joe. Believe me, you DON'T want to go there. Spent my first 30 years in that southside suburb. It's barely recognizable from 20 years ago. Nice having all the options, but I wouldn't want all their traffic. There's some good things about living on the "seedier" side of town.

The East side has really gone to Hell in the past 20 years -- really bad in the past decade.
