Self examination

Unspeakable acts that dominate the news occasionally makes us take a look at our own morals and values. The shootings in Colorado and Connecticut has forced people across the nation to look at their guns, their rights and how the culture of violence affects common citizens. While the gun control measures proposed in Congress have failed to pass, the efforts have spurred us to look at our Constitution and individual belief systems. For the first time in almost 30 years of marriage, my wife and I had a real discussion and debate about guns and their role in society.  I am sure such conversations have taken place across the land.

This dialogue is a good thing.

By the same token, are liberals having an honest look at their own beliefs and values when it comes to abortion? The Gosnell case in Philadelphia displays in gory detail the dark side of abortions. The public picture abortion supporters want to display is of a poor teen girl, or a rape victim opting for abortion as the best option in a long list of bad outcomes. We are reminded that abortions are performed to save the life of a pregnant woman facing certain death if the baby is carried to term. Abortion is disguised as "women's health", because who wants to think about such measures as baby killing?

Do you supporters of abortion look at the details of the Gosnell practice and wonder if killing live babies by 'snipping' their spinal cord meets with your definition of "choice"? Does the evidence of late term, partial birth and botched abortions make you question your unhesitating support of universal abortion?

Do the grisly details of abortion in America make you queasy? Do you ask your self if your beliefs are right and correct? Wouldn't that discussion be good for America?

Truth: saying that criminals are going to get guns whether or not you regulate gun sales is the same as saying that women are going to get third trimester abortions à la Kermit Gosnell whether or not you regulate the procedure.

To throw up your hands and say, "Why bother regulating?" in either case is flat out wrong, although that argument seems to work fine for the gun camp as they happily sell gun after gun to pretty much anybody.

Sort of how Gosnell happily performed illegal third trimester abortions. You can bet there are plenty more just like him in god-knows-how-many bloody back rooms. There always has been and there always will be, although you'd like to think they're a tad bit more nervous than usual watching the Gosnell trial play out over every available news media.

But guys selling guns to criminals? They NEVER break out a sweat. Why should they? The NRA will go to the ends of the earth to protect them.

And while you'll snark away about banning knives and ball bearings, hoose, I doubt you'll joke about banning coat hangers.

If the NRA is supporting criminals with guns then the pro choice groups are supporting the murder of the unborn.

It is already illegal for a felon to possess a firearm. Enforce that law.

Current case law not withstanding, I do not think a bartender is responsible if a woman gets drunk and wrecks her car or kills someone.

If I rent you a wood chipper and you re-enact a scene from Fargo, am I responsible?

I am not a member of the NRA, so I have not read their propoganda, but I doubt they are actively arguing that felons should be allowed to by guns.

As for abortion, we are fooling ourselves if we think it has not gone on since Gloria Cavewoman said "What's this in my belly and make it go away".

I wish it were a more rare thing. I am not sure there is a reasonable way to legislate that.

My point is we have a national diologue about about guns every time a wacko goes crazy, but w enever talk about abortion and the huge number of babies that are killed. Those of certain political persuasions do not want to address the cultural ills that lead to places like Gosnell's clinic.

banning abortion will not work any better than banning guns.

I am a member of the NRA and Erin, like most liberals, is willfully lying about their mission and what they have said.

Even if I weren't a member of the NRA, I'm smart enough to properly interpret the plain English language the NRA uses to defend 2nd Amendment rights. I can't help it if liberals don't speak the same plain English that I do.

But it's futile to discuss these things with liberals, because shut up you Neanderthals.

Most Liberals let the media do their thinking for them.

"but w enever talk about abortion and the huge number of babies that are killed."

Joe, that statement is an absolute farce. Many state legislators barely talk about anything else:

Florida Rep. Darryl "Rouson said he hopes the legislature can focus on something else now. "I've been up here five sessions now, and every last one we're dealing with abortion bills," he said. "You would think we could deal with some women's rights issues or things of great governmental concern, other than every year coming back and trying to do something with abortion."

And their endless talk has resulted in record numbers of laws restricting women's access to completely legal abortions. Really.

Now here's something people really don't talk about: how many guns are used in suicides. But if anyone should DARE suggest someone wait 24 hours or three days (not including weekends and holidays) or even one damn HOUR to buy a gun, the gun camp would flip the hell out even though that cooling off time might very well prevent a notable number of suicides.

I call bullshit on your quote. There is a waiting period to buy a gun.

And when was the last time gun questions failed to be on the agenda?

Erin O'Brien said...

Bullshit on the quote, eh? The link is posted right there, hoose. Maybe you should email Laura Basset and accuse her of committing libel.

As for waiting periods on gun purchases, they vary by state. Many states have none at all. Look it up.
