Sobering Thought

The wife and I went for some Mexican food last night. On the way we passed one of the local funeral homes.  The parking lot was packed. It occurred to me that if I happened to assume room temperature today, outside of my family, I doubt a dozen people would show up to pay their final respects.

Funerals are a waste of money.

Isn't it a little early for commercials for Its a Wonderful Life?

"Funerals are a waste of money."

Easy to say, but since they're a grief-handling mechanism for those left behind, I certainly hope you keep that attitude to yourself when attending one.

Rita,

There is no "IWL" aspect to this post, rather an acceptance that I have few roots in the community where I live. I grew up no where near here. I work from home. When I worked in a factory (now closed) it was in a different town. My closest friends live an hour away.

My wife, on the other hand, seems to know everyone in town. If she could just get each person who says hello to her on a typical WalMart visit to vote for her, she would be a shoo-in for mayor.

Fuzzy, I am not so cold-hearted that I would criticize how anyone spends their money re losing a loved one.
It's my opinion that a typical funeral causes financial stress.
I paid for my cremation 15 years ago and have informed my family that nothing else need be done after my death unless it's their choice to do so. For that matter, they can leave the ashes unclaimed and I promise not to haunt them.
