Admission

I may have to renounce my English Lit minor from college, but Walden is dreck. Just because it is loved and shoved by the back-to-nature hippies and college profs does not make it good reading.

Moby Dick is just unreadable.  The same goes for just about anything from Hawthorne.

When my daughter was assigned it in High School she told me that Thoreau was a crackpot, who needed a job.

I think the girl turned out all right.

Don't even get me started on John Hershey's "Hiroshima". It's called war for a reason!

I've met WWII vets who thought the A-bombings might have been a little excessive.

But I've never met one who thought it shouldn't have been dropped and that the Japs didn't deserve every bit of what they got.

And yes, I said "Japs". Sue me.
