If your favorite newsreader or network tells you the holiday represents the ending of slavery, they are uneducated, misinformed, or liars. Whichever the case, you should regard anything else they tell you with extreme skepticism.

Setting the record straight
Look, if we are going to have Juneteenth as a federal holiday, fine. But in no way, shape, or form, is the day a commemoration of the date slavery ended. That date can refer to the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. (Jan 1st) or the date slavery actually ended (13th Amendment passed on December 6th). Juneteenth is the date slaves in Houston / Galveston learned the Civil War was over.

I have no problem with Juneteenth being a state holiday in
Texas. After all it's a Texas event.
However, lets discuss the various POTUS of the North who owned(either outright or through marriage)slaves and the fact that pockets of the North still had active slavery up to 25 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted(and that Proclamation was when the South was still at war with the North and it only applied to the people held in bondage in the South(as the North considered the South in rebellion during a Civil War-which it was not, it was the South trying to break away from the North to form it's own country.
After the Revolutionary way, when we all banded against Britain for our freedom from English rule, we as a nation turned against each other, as in North vs. South. The North was complicit in the slavery economy benefitting indirectly from the U.S. domestic slave trade, worth perhaps $440m in total and moving more enslaved people (about 750,000) since 1790 than the middle passage of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. To the North the slave trade was crucial in the westward movement of investment together with the development of new financial products including securities, bonds, and mortgages. Historians have revealed how deeply committed many nineteenth century banks, especially in New York, were to the continued expansion of slavery.
After vanquishing the South in the war the Federal government turned it's sights on exterminating the Native Peoples from this continent, thus the phrase, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" became a rallying cry among the native Americans and Southern citizens.
People just have no clue as they are not taught in school and never research beyond what those biased school books laid out and take it as Gospel truth.
I shall stop rattling on now and say I agree with your Juneteenth premise.
You are right. And history is not taught in schools any more.
The Proclamation did NOT end slavery, only in the areas in rebellion. Only it’s the passage of the 13th Amendment was slavery outlawed. BTW, the position of the Federal Government was that the Confederate states never left, until they needed to be readmitted, then they had to ratify the 13th Amendment in order to get statehood back...what?
Reconstruction was so onerous it took two generations and WWI to bring the country together. Then the progressives brought racism back (KKK, Margaret Sanger...etc.) and things have never been the same.
Juneteenth was just an excuse for another national paid day off for the permanent bureaucracy in DC (anyone else who gets it off, that's just gravy). As slugmama points out, it's a Texas holiday, and has no national significance whatsoever, especially since it was not the day slavery ended nationally. But the Swamp needs its paid days off, and what the Swamp wants, the Swamp gets.
Admitting all the above is true.

I have never believed Margaret Sanger was racist. Read the link.
Margaret Sanger had poor women beg her how not to become pregnant. They thought the wealthy women had a secret the held from poor women.
Read her writings, she targeted black communities, was a complete supporter of eugenics.
And if we are going to tear down statues of Lincoln and banish anyone who ever muttered the N word, then Sangers support of Eugenics should be disavowed and recognized as well.
